What Is a HEIC File, and Why Convert It to JPEG?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) has been the default photo format on iPhones since iOS 11 arrived in September 2017, on every model from the iPhone 7 onward. It compresses pictures with the HEVC video codec, so a HEIC file is roughly half the size of a JPG of the same quality, and it can hold extras that JPG cannot, like the depth map from Portrait mode. The numbers add up quickly: Photutorial estimates that about 2.1 trillion photos were taken in 2025, 94% of them on phones, and every iPhone shot taken with default settings lands as a HEIC file. JPG (JPEG) dates from 1992. It makes bigger files and has fewer features, but almost every device, browser, printer and upload form accepts it. That is the reason to convert: keep the HEIC originals on your phone, where they save space, and send JPG copies whenever a photo leaves the Apple world. How to Batch Convert HEIC to JPG
Each batch holds up to 60 photos. Every file gets its own progress bar, and a “Download all (ZIP)” button appears when the last one is done. Names stay the same apart from the extension, so IMG_4821.heic comes back as IMG_4821.jpg. Photos upload one after another, which keeps things moving on a slow connection, and “Convert more photos” starts the next batch.
With hundreds of files, a desktop tool will save you time:
- On a Mac: select the photos in Finder, right click and choose Quick Actions → Convert Image. Preview does the same with File → Export Selected Images, and Automator or Shortcuts can run it on a whole folder.
- On Windows: free batch tools such as XnConvert or IrfanView (with its HEIF plugin) convert a whole folder in one pass.
- On the command line: ImageMagick does it in one line,

How to Make Your iPhone Shoot JPG Instead of HEIC
If you'd rather never convert at all, you can set the iPhone to save JPGs from the start.
Change the camera format
Open Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG and videos as H.264. Photos you already have stay HEIC, since the setting only applies to what you shoot next. The cost is storage: a JPG takes up roughly twice the space of the same photo in HEIC.
Convert automatically when transferring
Or keep shooting HEIC and let the phone convert on the way out. In Settings → Photos (on iOS 18 and later, Settings → Apps → Photos), scroll to Transfer to Mac or PC and pick Automatic. Photos copied to a computer over USB then arrive as JPG, while Keep Originals sends the HEIC files unchanged. WhatsApp, Messenger and most mail apps also convert to JPG by themselves when you share a photo.
Why Windows Won't Open HEIC Files (and How to Fix It)
A fresh install of Windows 10 or 11 can't show HEIC photos. Support comes as two separate Microsoft Store extensions: HEIF Image Extensions, which is free, and HEVC Video Extensions, which does the actual decoding and costs $0.99. Some PC makers preinstall the second one, so a few laptops open HEIC files right away.
Installing both doesn't solve everything. Plenty of web forms, older versions of Photoshop, print shops and marketplace uploaders still reject .heic files. A JPG avoids all of that: it opens on any Windows PC without extra software and is accepted almost everywhere you upload photos. The converter at the top of the page does it for free.
What Happens to Your Files
Your photos are yours. Here's exactly how this service treats them: converted files are stored for 30 days so you can come back and download them later or grab them on another device, and then they're deleted automatically, with no action needed from you. Download links use long random tokens that can't be guessed or enumerated.
We don't ask for an account, an email address or a phone number. Nobody looks at your photos, they're never shared or sold, and they're not used to train any machine learning models. IP addresses are stored only as irreversible hashes, solely to prevent abuse of the service. If you'd like a file removed before the 30 day window ends, contact us and we'll delete it manually. Until then, nobody can open it unless you share the link.

What the converter keeps, and what it leaves behind
Moving a photo from HEIC to JPG is not a perfect copy, because the two formats can store different things. This is what survives the trip and what does not. There are no settings to change; every file is handled the same way.

When a file will not go through
If a file is rejected, the message on screen tells you why. These are the ones you are most likely to see, and what to do about each.
This check looks at the file extension. Photos that reached you through WhatsApp, Messenger or email are usually JPG already, so there is nothing to convert. Apple ProRAW shots are DNG files (around 75 MB each at 48 megapixels) and belong in a raw editor.
The converter reads the first bytes of every upload, where the format records its brand, such as heic, heix or mif1. A file that fails that test is almost always a JPG or PNG renamed by hand, or a download that stopped halfway.
The limit is 40 MB per file. Regular iPhone photos are far smaller: Apple puts even a 48 megapixel HEIF Max shot at about 5 MB. If you see this message, the file is probably a very large panorama or not a phone photo at all.
Each connection can convert up to 1,200 photos a day, which is 20 full batches, and it resets the next day. A similar message, “Too many conversions in a short time”, appears after 180 photos in ten minutes; wait a few minutes and carry on. Both caps exist only to stop scripts from hogging the server.
Photos are uploaded and converted one at a time, not all together, so a slow connection does not time out. Watch the progress bar next to each file; the download buttons show up once the last photo is done.
Converted photos are deleted 30 days after they are made, and the download link dies with them. Convert the original once more and you get a fresh link.
